加the往往跟习惯用法有关。at home固定是不加the的，因为“在家”这里不需要特指是哪一个家，只需要表明一个状态“在家”即可。
而country是可数名词单数，表示在一个国家里，要特指是哪一个国家，所以要加the。如果country表示“乡村”，前面通常也是要加the的。

the不用于国家、省市等名词前，但由短语组成的国名，或以s结尾的国名前需要用the。例如：
the Philippines  菲律宾  the Netherlands荷兰
注：the Ukraine 乌克兰, the Congo刚果, the Sudan苏丹, the Hague海牙为例外。

用于表示地区的名词前。例如：
the middle east 中东
the far east 远东

不用于街道、建筑等名词前，但有 of 介词短语修饰时，需用the。例如：
Broadway 百老汇
the tower of London 伦敦塔

用于河流、海洋、群岛、山脉、海峡、海湾名词前。例如：
the Mississippi 密西西比河 the Atlantic 大西洋

不用于大学名称前，但有 of 介词短语修饰时，需用the。例如：
Yale University 耶鲁大学
the university of North Carolina 北卡罗来纳大学

广场：in People's Square（在人民广场）、in Times Square（在时代广场）

具体位置、方位：at the end of the corridor（走廊尽头）、at the back of the room（房间后面）、at the corner of the street（街道转角处）

旁边：He stopped me at the door.（他在门旁边拦住了我。）

公司、大学：work at EF（在英孚工作）、study at Yale University（在耶鲁大学学习）

美术馆、电影院：at the Louvre（在卢浮宫）、at the cinema（在电影院）

机场：at the airport

交通工具在某城市停靠：Does this train stop at Nanjing?（这列火车在南京停吗？）
