这句话使用的是一种形容词的比较级结构：
【 the＋比较级＋of the two 】
当两者相比较的时候，有of the two出现，形容词比较级前面要加the，表示【两个中较……的一个】。

例句：
Lucy is the taller of the two girls.  露西是两个女孩中较高的一个。
Do you know the taller of the two boys? 你认识这两个男孩中较高的那一个吗？

所以这句话，只是把of the two books提前了，还原成正常的语序就是：
I found the horror novel (to be) the more entertaining of the two books.

如果这句话里面没有of the two，只是单纯比较这一本比那一本有趣，用than来比较的话，比较级前面就不需要加the：
I found the horror novel (to be ) more entertaining than the other book.
