embrace Jane Austen. The beloved English author is getting her own winter festival on PBS, starting with a new Masterpiece Theatre production of Persuasion. Arriving Jan. 13, this 90-minute film will kick off a three-month-long film collection of The Complete Jane Austen. There also will be new productions of Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park and Sense and Sensibility, along with a new Austen
biopic, Miss Austen Regrets, and reruns of Emma and Pride and Prejudice. So what's the continued appeal of Austen's work? "All the six novels are love stories," says Andrew Davies, who adapted Abbey, Sense, Emma and Pride, "and that's something that never
goes out of date." And it doesn't hurt, he says, that the heroes are, well, better than the modern average. "These men are so
satisfactory, unlike the men we see around us, the men indeed that we are."
